[Note: I want it known that I have severely censored myself in this post because my first braindump of this was mostly cussing… This just pisses me off…]
In the early morning of December 26th, we had a break-in at work, the culprits making off with oral tobacco for a large sum. They broke one of the windows in the serving area and got out with what they were after. The whole thing took only about three minutes.
1.45 am the night to yesterday it was time again.
Two people broke through a window in the serving area, the one next to the recently fixed one, while another one was waiting down the street with a car. They took a hammer to the locked fridge where we keep the unbroken rolls of oral tobacco and emptied it. They also took a large amount of cigarettes that was unfortunately not locked in.
All of this took less than two minutes and one of them even had the cheek to swipe two big cans of Red Bull on their way out.
We know all of this because we have a video of them doing it. After the break-in around Christmas, we installed four new cameras that record as soon as they pick up movement, so my bosses were able to show it to the police when they got there. When I got to work at 2 pm I went back and watched it myself, and was tasked with making a backup copy on a memory stick to give to the police. Unfortunately, it doesn’t tell us much more than how they did their stuff. These guys obviously knew about the cameras (not surprising since they are not allowed to be hidden, and there need to be signs and stuff telling people that we have camera surveillance) because they were very careful to cover their faces. Because of this, we only have the clothes and their general body-shapes to help identify them, which helps pretty much nothing. There just isn’t enough to go on, and that is incredibly frustrating. We don’t even know if this is the same guys that were responsible for the last break-in since we don’t have any video from that due to the cameras not being up and running yet at that point. I prefer to believe that it is the same people though because if it’s not, that means we have two separate groups of burglars running around a very small town. And I would rather not think about the implications of that.
Things like this make me really angry. I mean, what is the difficulty in keeping your hands off of things that don’t belong to you? That should be common sense!
And things like this seem to be happening more and more frequently, which is a rather scary thought. It is definitely an escalation from the common shoplifters that we are usually dealing with (because yes, we do have a group of teenagers that we keep an eye on whenever they come in) and at this point, I don’t know how likely it is that we are dealing with people we know. Truthfully, I hope that we aren’t.
And I will now break off this rant before I go on a complete tangent. I just needed to get some of the frustration off my chest.
Have a wonderful day and stay crazy!
