I am not the journaling kind, but I am making an exception for this. I feel like I am going to need a place to keep track of things after all, though I don’t know what kind of things yet.
My name is Kit, and I spend most of my free time in front of my PC playing games. And this afternoon something interesting happened. I was just sitting down after work when a message popped up on the screen. Now, normally I just close a pop-up without looking at it, but something about this caught my attention. Maybe it was the background, maybe it was the fact that it was addressed to my full name. I don’t know, but I ended up reading it. The background was a soft lilac with a dragonfly design embedded, and this is what it said:
‘Dear Miss Kit —.
We are happy to inform you that you have been accepted as a participant of The Great and Secret Game. It will pose a challenge, but on the event that you should win, there are wealth and power untold waiting for you at the finishing line.
To start, please follow the below chart to convert your first name into numbers. Those numbers will show you the next clue, so keep an eye out for them.’
There was no signature, just a table of letters and numbers. Now, I know that to most it would sound like an obvious prank or a scam, but I have actually heard about this before. For the past few months there have been whispers online about this Game, and after taking a screenshot of the invitation, I decided to start digging some more. Not that it helped me much.
Any information I could find about the Game was fragmented at best. Whispers, rumors, and speculations. But it did tell me something. The Game is real and can only be entered by invitation. No one knows what criteria is used to choose participants. And no one knows who is running it or why.
I could find nothing about keeping it secret, so I got on the phone to Joanna, a friend and colleague of mine, to talk it through. Her suggestion was to ignore it all together, but I am not sure that is an option. I think that the moment I got the invitation, I was already playing. One thing worries me though…
No matter how hard I look, I can’t find anyone claiming to have won this Game.
We’ll see what tomorrow brings. For now, this is Kit, player number 11 9 20, signing off.
